In civil law, the costs are usually based on the amount in dispute. If there is a lot of money at stake for the client, the lawyer also earns more. Therefore, the old saying “A lawyer is as rich as his clients” is not entirely unjustified. As a rough rule of thumb, you can say that the costs for out-of-court representation for an amount in dispute of up to €10,000 are approximately 10 percent of the amount in dispute. The higher the amount in dispute, the lower the percentage. For an amount in dispute of €50,000, the lawyer’s fee is around 4 percent. If an agreement is reached, the costs for the lawyer are usually doubled, as the lawyer is then rewarded with a settlement fee.
